The Riverbend District was established in 1995, and its 231 acres have been steadily transitioning to educational, retail and commercial uses. Infrastructure improvements have supported the development of North Idaho College's Workforce Training Center and the University of Idaho's Research Park, which draws research and technology companies. In 2005, Buck Knives relocated its manufacturing plant from California, bringing 150 jobs immediately, with a total of 240 jobs planned. The Riverbend District will terminate in 2012. To date, the assessed value of the District has increased more than $12 million.
The Post Falls URA assisted in the extension of sewer, water and other public utilities, the construction and dedication of interior streets and adjacent arterials. The improvements have stimulated the development of a significant number of light manufacturing and service buildings owned or leased by new employers who have relocated to the City of Post Falls. A total of 1,390 new service, medical, research and education and manufacturing jobs have been created by the 23 new employers located in this District.
Employers occupying new buildings that they own or lease include Buck Knives (relocated from Encino. California and employing 300), Center Partners (relocated from Spokane, WA and employing 600), All Wall Construction (employing 120), University of Idaho Research Center and others. The proponent recently broke ground for a $35 Million bio-tech building for the Danish company ALK-Abello, which will employ approximately 45 scientific personnel and others developing and manufacturing allergy medications. This company is relocating and consolidating its existing operations from Spokane, Washington to Post Falls.
